Makeup Has An Impact On Eye Health

Most cosmetics are safe for daily use. However, there are risks you should understand. If used incorrectly, makeup can damage your eyes. To avoid eye irritation, skin redness, dry eyes and eye infections here are five useful tips:

1. Keep Your Hands And Brushes Clean

Your hands are exposed to many different types of bacteria that can cause eye infections. Always wash your hands before applying makeup. If you use application brushes, clean them often. This will also help keep things bacteria free.

2. Pay Attention To Expiration Dates

Follow the expiration dates on your mascara, eye shadows and eyeliners. Eye makeup (especially those that are liquids or creams) are likely to develop bacteria. Most professionals suggest keeping eye makeup for only 3–4 months. A good way to keep track is to write the date you start using a product on the outside with a black marker.

3. Have An Infection? Take A Break

Don’t use cosmetics if you have an eye infection. If you continue to apply makeup you risk causing further irritation and contaminating your cosmetics. Wait for your eyes to fully recover before wearing makeup again.

4. No Sharing

Don’t share cosmetics. This can cause bacteria to spread. If you are trying out new makeup at the store, remember to use a fresh applicator.

5. Wash Makeup Off Before Bed

Always remove your makeup at night before you sleep. Removing makeup, particularly mascara, helps prevent the eye glands from getting clogged. If the glands get clogged your eyes can become dry, red and irritated.
